Almighty G-d, remember the six million people that were gassed, killed, drowned, burned alive, tortured, beaten or frozen to death. For the sake of one man, a whole nation was crucified, while the world looked on in silence. In our hearts, their sacred memory will last forever and ever. Amen.

Der Golem, shown in the USA as “The Monster of Fate” is a 1915 silent horror film written and directed by Paul Wegener and Henrik Galeen. It is inspired by ancient Jewish legend. It is a long lost film, though the Deutsche Kinemathek film archive possesses “108 meter fragments”. It is the first of a trilogy by Wegener, followed by The Golem and the Dancing Girl (1917) and The Golem: How He Came into the World (1920).

In this version of the golem legend, the golem, a clay statue brought to life by Rabbi Loew in 16th century Prague to save the Jews from the ongoing brutal persecution by the city’s rulers, is found in the rubble of an old synagogue in the 20th century. Brought to life by an antique dealer, the golem is used as a menial servant. Eventually falling in love with the dealer’s wife, it goes on a murderous rampage when its love for her goes unanswered.

Today are living in Israel less than 200 thousand Holocaust Survivors, at least 50 thousand are living in poverty; and who remember them? Who is taking care of them?
The needs of needy Holocaust survivors will continue to grow. The younger generation will not forgive us if we do not deal respectfully with the older generation.

The best way to remember six million of Jews is to take care of those survivors who live among us. Each one of them has a name and we must take care of them, they are our heritage, our present and future.
